Grossular Garnet, cross section

Grossular Garnet, cross section

Properties: In the Middle Ages, the deep red almandine garnet was known as carbuncle, which was reputed to “glow in the dark”. This referred to the inner fire of the garnet becoming visible after polishing. In this way, garnet represented the journey of the soul, and just as polishing a garnet will bring out its hidden fire, life’s trials and difficulties are seen as a polishing process for our hidden character. Garnet gives support in times that could be only described as the Long Dark Night of the Soul. Traditionally, garnets were worn to bring luck, wealth and blessings, and were often set into shields and the hilt of swords to protect warriors against harm. It is still considered to be a stone of grounding and protection, and used in times of crisis. It engenders a feeling of community in difficult times. Garnet promotes self-confidence, eliminates unnecessary inhibitions, and encourages a balanced approach to sexuality, as well as strengthening the body’s ability to regenerate and fight infection.
